DEFINED

Defined, previously known as the Institute of Ministry, is a ministry of Ironwood using the unique aspects of the camping ministry to disciple young adults for an extended time through practical classes, hands-on ministry experience, and exposure to dedicated mentors. The purpose is to enable young adults to live consistent Christian lives and minister in their homes and churches—all to the glory of God.
All of the crew members are actively involved in camp here at Ironwood. At any given time you will see them cooking, serving, doing dishes, running program activities, and a ton of other jobs here at camp. In addition to all of the service they do at camp, they have class most Wednesday afternoons.
Practical Experience & Leadership Responsbility
Each student is assigned a work area at camp each semester. Our goal is to rotate students through multiple work areas to develop practical life and job skills. Each area holds them accountable for their responsibilities and gives them a clear evaluation of their progress. Possible work areas include the following.
Auto Shop
We strive to be good stewards of what God has given us. Our Auto Shop crew services, maintains, and repairs our fleet of vehicles and equipment at Ironwood.
Food Services
The Homestead Posse prepares a variety of meals for campers. We make our famous cinnamon roles and desserts in-house. Our motto is “Good grub and plenty of it!”

Maintenance
Office Assistant
Program Assistant
Program assistants run and maintain the many activities we offer to campers, feed and clean up after our horses, manage our stores, and work closely with retreats by providing a smooth camper experience.
Classroom Instruction
Defined classes are academic in structure and some may be accepted as transfer credits at other Christian institutions. The primary goal of each class is the practical application of Truth to everyday life. Students take two classes per quarter.
Church Participation
Defined strives to encourage your commitment to a local church. If we are going to live a “consistent Christian life and minister in their homes and local churches – all to the glory of God,” then we must be convinced of the importance of the local church and our place in the body of Christ. We plug you into one of our surrounding partner church ministries and encourage you to “Show Up, Build Up, and Give Up.” Edify other believers with your presence, your gifting, your personal giving, and your time.
As young adults enter a new stage of life, they will likely be “church shopping” on their own within a few years. Twice a year, Defined students go on a church field trip where they visit other churches, observe different ministry models, and are able to ask pastors questions on ministry philosophy. Students then debrief their visits with guided discussions that prompt them to think critically and Biblically about what they have observed.
