DEFINED

Defined, previously known as the Institute of Ministry, is a ministry of Ironwood using the unique aspects of the camping ministry to disciple young adults for an extended time through practical classes, hands-on ministry experience, and exposure to dedicated mentors. The purpose is to enable young adults to live consistent Christian lives and minister in their homes and churches—all to the glory of God.

All of the crew members are actively involved in camp here at Ironwood. At any given time you will see them cooking, serving, doing dishes, running program activities, and a ton of other jobs here at camp. In addition to all of the service they do at camp, they have class most Wednesday afternoons.

Practical Experience & Leadership Responsbility

Each student is assigned a work area at camp each semester. Our goal is to rotate students through multiple work areas to develop practical life and job skills. Each area holds them accountable for their responsibilities and gives them a clear evaluation of their progress. Possible work areas include the following.

Auto Shop

We strive to be good stewards of what God has given us. Our Auto Shop crew services, maintains, and repairs our fleet of vehicles and equipment at Ironwood.

Food Services

The Homestead Posse prepares a variety of meals for campers. We make our famous cinnamon roles and desserts in-house. Our motto is “Good grub and plenty of it!”

Grounds

The Grounds crew aims to maintain a pleasant atmosphere at camp through landscaping, road maintenance, and waste management.

Hospitality

The Hospitality team removes unnecessary distractions to our spiritual goals at camp by ensuring cabins are comfortable, restrooms are spotless, and messes are swiftly cleaned.

Longevity

Longevity renews and remodels our existing buildings and staff homes, and spearheads new construction around the property.

Maintenance

Maintenance services the electrical, plumbing, water treatment, and heating/cooling systems around camp, as well as addressing the multitude of regular fixes for 115+ buildings!

Office Assistant

Our various Office Assistant positions handle the processes of registering campers upon arrival, coordinating with churches prior to retreats, and helpfully answering the many questions that come in.

Program Assistant

Program assistants run and maintain the many activities we offer to campers, feed and clean up after our horses, manage our stores, and work closely with retreats by providing a smooth camper experience.

Classroom Instruction

Defined classes are academic in structure and some may be accepted as transfer credits at other Christian institutions. The primary goal of each class is the practical application of Truth to everyday life. Students take two classes per quarter.

Church Participation

Defined strives to encourage your commitment to a local church. If we are going to live a “consistent Christian life and minister in their homes and local churches – all to the glory of God,” then we must be convinced of the importance of the local church and our place in the body of Christ. We plug you into one of our surrounding partner church ministries and encourage you to “Show Up, Build Up, and Give Up.” Edify other believers with your presence, your gifting, your personal giving, and your time.

As young adults enter a new stage of life, they will likely be “church shopping” on their own within a few years. Twice a year, Defined students go on a church field trip where they visit other churches, observe different ministry models, and are able to ask pastors questions on ministry philosophy. Students then debrief their visits with guided discussions that prompt them to think critically and Biblically about what they have observed.

FAQs

Defined is for high-school graduates with a desire to glorify the Lord in all that they do. This program can be used as a learning time prior to college, in the middle of one’s college career, or in lieu of college. Either way, the three years spent at Defined will be a valuable tool to help find or further God’s will for life and future ministry.

All potential participants must understand that Defined is not a reform school designed to rehabilitate young people; therefore, all individuals must desire to be involved in ministry, demonstrate a servant’s heart, and demonstrate a desire to grow spiritually.

Each year of Defined (September-May) costs $3,700. This all-inclusive price covers room and board, utilities, all books needed for class, and required field trips.

Each “year” of Defined is a nine-month program that runs from late August through late May. There is approximately a three week break in December for Christmas.

No. Each year can stand alone. It is acceptable to attend Defined for one or two years. However, the full scope of the program is three years, and those who attend the full three-year program will receive a Certificate of Ministry.

Yes, very much so! Defined is designed so that participants become an integral part of the camping ministry. This involvement will include all aspects of the ministry, including program and camper services opportunities.

Participants work in exchange for hands-on training, on-the-job learning, and room, board, and utilities (excluding phone). A small stipend is given each month which is just enough to cover basic personal expenses.

No. The hands-on experience is a vital time of learning and character formation.

No. Involvement in the ministry at Ironwood includes 40-55 hours of work each week, discipleship, and on-the-job training. Added to that will be classes, homework, and personal study. The design of the schedule would not accommodate outside employment.

Our Defined and Ministry Bound participants live on the Ministry Campus, right in the midst of Ironwood. The Ministry Campus includes a guys’ dorm, girls’ dorm, classroom, laundry facilities, a weight room, a volleyball and pickleball court, and a large shared living room.

Defined is meant to be a small camaraderie of like-minded individuals. Admission into Defined is based on the needs of the Ironwood ministry. Therefore, the number of individuals accepted may vary. Because the core of Defined is based on ministry, it is important that we have ministry opportunities available to each of our participants. The size of Defined will grow in proportion to the needs of the Ironwood ministry. The typical size of Defined is around 10-14 participants.

This is an option, but not necessarily a requirement. Defined participants have the opportunity to apply for a summer staff position. Acceptance into Defined is not a guarantee of a summer staff position, nor is acceptance onto summer staff a guarantee of admission into Defined.

Individuals who desire to do all three years of Defined and receive the Certificate of Ministry will be required to work at Ironwood for at least one summer.
